Why are there sticks in my bag of bird food?
It's common to find small stick-like objects in your bag of bird seed. These are not wood, but are pieces of the sunflower plant called "chaff". Chaff is any part of the sunflower that remains after the seed has been cleaned. It isn't digestible by humans, but it is not harmful to birds.
Global Harvest Foods removes the highest percentage of chaff in the wild bird food industry. A 40-pound bag of our Black Oil Sunflower Seed is 98.5% pure seed by weight. This allows us to deliver a remarkably clean product that exceeds industry norms and satisfies retailers, consumers, and birds!

Are your bags recyclable?
To protect the health of both birds and customers, we use barrier packaging consistent with FDA guidelines for food safety as mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011. This type of plastic packaging is sometimes recyclable, but depends on local municipal waste programs. Check with the organization that serves your community to find out whether they can recycle flexible bags.
